Gamlin chants the mantra of self reliance as he appeals citizens to rededicate themselves for the cause of state

The Chief Minister’s first address to the state

No much changes in developmental policies

ITANAGAR, June 1:  The Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin in his first address to the people of the state after assuming office has warned the people of the state that the road ahead is difficult and it will “need tremendous efforts from each one of us to travel on this journey towards true growth and progress. Today, I call upon every Arunachali to re-dedicate ourselves to the land that we call home. It is now time for our state to emerge confidently as a ‘people’s state’- with only one agenda- that of self-reliance”. Today, I commit myself to that goal, he said.

“Arunachal has never before been as precariously poised in history. We are at the doorstep of great progress; and at the same time there is also a worry that we may not be able to realize these possibilities.

Much work will have to be done to ensure that the vision of a self-reliant Arunachal becomes a reality” Gamlin said.

“The untimely death of our beloved Chief Minister late Dorjee Khanduji will always remain as one of the darkest moments in the history of our state. In his passing away, Arunachal Pradesh has lost one of its most illustrious and compassionate leaders.

History will remember him as a Laughing Buddha in the true sense of the word because of the unprecedented developmental work that had been taken up under him” said the Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister also remembered Security Officer Yeshi Chodak, Captains JS Babbar and TS Mamik and Yeshi Lhamu who were with him on that ill-fated day.

“I have assumed the office of the Chief Minster with utmost humility and as a tribute to late Dorjee Khandu. I have no doubt in my mind that this is an extension of his vision and that my foremost responsibility is to carry forward his dream of making Arunachal and its people prosperous, self-reliant and happy. My priority and my concentrated efforts will always be to ensure that the pace of development that he has set in motion is carried forward and gains momentum”, he said hinting that there will not be much changes in the developmental policies and program.

“As we begin to re-live our lives, we must take a moment to see what lies before us. There is a little anxiety about all the mega developmental works that has been started. The 1656 km long trans-Arunachal highway connecting every district headquarter, the Greenfield airport, the State Secretariat building, the Legislative Assembly building, prioritisation of the health, tourism and hydro power sectors and the challenges of implementing the Right to Education are just some of the projects and initiatives that have been started under Khanduji and which will now need our constant attention and monitoring” he said. At this difficult and tragic time, I appeal to the people of Arunachal to stand united and to work together to take this dream forward. I feel that only when we can continue, and actually accelerate the pace of development that he has set in motion, that we will truly pay tribute to the memory of late Dorjee Khandu, he said.

“Let this be a time not of blame games and mistrust of each other but a time of understanding, cooperation and trust. With these changed times, our responsibilities as a people have increased. We need to put more into our state than ever before. Let us also, therefore, change’ he said.

“It is without doubt that in this new journey we will face moments of disagreement, occasions where perhaps people will hold diverse points of view. I want to appeal to each one of you to maintain calm in any such incidence. We have repeatedly seen that any critical situation can be understood and resolved only on the strength of dialogue and consultation. The government, on its part, has always and will always take steps to find solutions to any issue that comes up. But it is important that we must all stand with each other and address these situations collectively and with due respect to the rule of law. That is a very critical point. At no time in our state’s history has anything been achieved by force or coercion’ he said.

“Arunachal, as a people, has always been an example as an “island of peace”. It will indeed be a sad moment if that reputation is lost. It will be the duty of my government to ensure that this good reputation continues to stay with us” he said.

“There have been many instances where the govt is taken almost to be an ‘enemy’ of its own people. This needs to change. We must together remember that the government exists because of its citizens, and for its citizens. I believe that this is definitely the time when we must come together as partners in development, not as opponents. I am convinced that it is only when we talk, when we communicate our expectations and fears - that our state can truly grow” Gamlin said.

I wish for Arunachal to become an example of good governance and growth. And this is where your involvement and participation as citizens and stakeholders become important; the chief minister said while adding that he would look forward to feedback and views- through the media, through a website of the CM’s secretariat that will be soon launched and through the elected representatives.

ITANAGAR, June 1: There is need to strengthen and update libraries in the state, said   Education and Library Minister Bosiram Siram during a visit to the state library this morning in Itanagar. Let there be fair distribution

of land

Dear Editor,

Hats off to the good Samaritan for taking pains in preserving and reshaping the oldest town Pasighat. Really it is amazing to see that govt. land in Pasighat is encroached upon and illegally occupied by individuals, the worst is the Mebo Township where individuals have erected houses by the side of almost every govt. quarters.

Even few govt. quarters have been dismantled near CHC and the govt. occupants have been refuge to other place/site forcefully by certain capitalists. However, I want to add a few comments on ZPM Bogong Anchal’s write-up - The Dark Side of the Coin. He writes  “ I request the Pasighat DC to set up a fact committee or inquiry committee to come clean on the whole matter immediately and cancel dubious land allotment certificates’’ and “I,  in the capacity of ZPM assure all kind of support to the district administration  in this regard” First , it will be best to use ‘corrupt’ instead of  ‘clean’ as the modus operandi of the DLAAB is politicized/corrupted in the sense that a few people who are relatives of Bureaucrats ,Politicians ,Capitalists  are time and again allotted the land and middle man like me are always  ignored, uncared and debarred from allotment in spite of several attempts since 1998. In the name of eviction also, the Bureaucrats are over looked and occupants of OBT are seriously targeted.

Secondly, what kind of support do the writer in the capacity of ZPM assures? It is interesting to learn that numbers of Plots in different site of Pasighat are occupied by the so called ZPM during his tenure as Member DLAAB. I may be wrong but the evidence is unofficially established with the fact that once there was a confrontation with the same ZPM and me for a piece of land at Pasighat Township. If the writer emphasizes the DC of any assurance, surrender his occupied plot first, and then support the DC.

Lastly, I would like to suggest and appeal the concerned people to take out mass rally to stop illegal encroachment and dislodge unauthorized occupants from the top order, or, please desist from pressurizing the District Administration rather let them work freely and allot land to the deserving people considering the seriousness and genuineness of the applicants.

Yours,

concerned citizen

Pasighat,  (on email)

I rest my case

Dear Editor,

We are a nation which has become increasingly progressive – driven by consumerism, materialism and a “new me or us” whose demands isn’t satiated by aspects which should otherwise have been considered generous.  This has led to a greater control of how the society should function by the netas, babus, corporate-government nexus, etc.

Every policy change, every tender, every road getting built, every construction or for that matter of a small shop selling our very own paan & cigarettes cannot function without a pay out to some higher authority. With this trend the fabric of our society is increasingly bringing itself to the edge of a hill – for after this point there is no stopping its downfall.

We all should take time off for a minute to reflect on what’s happening with our country, our state, our districts, our people and very importantly our youth. The lessons we are teaching is that it’s OK to be corrupt, that’s its OK to trample on someone to get ahead, that it’s OK to bunk classes and so many other negative lessons which everyone is aware of. Either we choose to ignore it or it’s become a part of our lives.

The government remains not so transparent. The RTI has just become another tool to seek revenge or vengeance. The corporate world has lost its shine with the recent spate of corruption and who knows what more is in store. The nexus between the government and the corporate world is increasingly adding to our woes. A case in point is the de-regulation of fuel prices. We are getting sold the story of how the rise in petrol, diesel and gas prices will affect our budget & savings now but it will benefit us when the crude oil price stabilizes in the months to come. For the last one year, I have not seen it stabilize and with the increasing unrest in the Middle East where we have the oil rich countries, I don’t see it stabilizing in more years to come.

I believe if the government reduced the number of taxes on petroleum products automatically there will be a reduction in petrol prices but sadly the government hasn’t let a leaf out of its place and decided to de-regulate the prices and shift the burden to our common man. Also, it’s important to remember that these Oil Companies have always made a profit year after year.

What’s going to get interesting now (in the Arunachal context) is that the prices of commodities will shoot up, even the locally available products will have its share in the increase of price on this pretext and later as the price of fuel drops, the price of commodities would remain the same. The District Authorities fail to regulate the prices of the goods in the market and our people here don’t have a problem with the increase in price. Did I mention about the value of money?

A strong government can really do a lot more, the Civil & Educated section can do a lot more, a weak citizen can do a lot more with strength in numbers but all of this is, but another fiction that our readers get to read in Readers Forum every day except for our Good Old Sunday. I rest my case.

Yours,

Kuru Rommel,

Need traffic regulation

Dear Editor,

The recent road accident which claimed many lives at Itanagar need to be viewed seriously by the concerned Traffic authority. It is very doubtful whether some of the driving license holders actually have required skill and knowledge of driving. Just knowing the basic art of driving should not be the only criteria for issuing the licenses, the drivers need to be well acquainted with traffic norms and rules. The safety measures should be put into priority and accordingly it has to be strictly followed.

It is observed that all are in a hurry while driving and try to overtake the other vehicles which cause traffic jam & related problems.

The pedestrians are also not spared due to reckless driving and violation of traffic rules. Shockingly, there is no traffic police nearby the Zebra line meant for the pedestrians at RK Mission hospital and other places.

The standard speed driving limit at the jam-packed places should be strongly adhered to and penalty may be imposed to those who fail to stick to traffic regulations. Hence, the authority concerned may kindly consider the issue with full comprehension and devotion in the interest of public safety and welfare.

Yours,

Jumnya Rina
